Caney Mountain Conservation Area

Caney Mountain originated as a wild turkey refuge in 1940, and in the fall of that year a herd of deer was added to fulfill the wildlife management plan authored by Aldo Leopold. In addition it is home to several rare species and the state's record Black Gum tree. With almost 8,000 acres of varied topography that includes caves, old growth forest, glades, and savannahs as well as a panoramic view of numerous peaks in the surrounding area, Caney Mountain offers a diverse experience for hikers, hunters, and primitive campers.
